The Dark Knight Rises thoughts under the cut. Spoilers and all that!
Well first I should address that I thought Anne Hathaway was a FANTASTIC Selina Kyle (I knew she would be), and the scene with her stealing the pearls from Bruce was one of my very favorite scenes in the movie.
I liked the little nods— Alligators in the sewer (a nod to Killer Croc?), the fact that they did tie Ra’s to a pit (that you… rose from). Those were p. cute.
Lol Marion Cottiliard Talia. That was obvs. from the start. I wonder what it was like for a non-comicker though? Like would that have been a huge twist/added something a bit there? Still bothered by that casting, even though Marion did a good job with the part she was given I think? And that’s the problem— the actors were good in their roles, as well as they could be, but she and Tom Hardy just shouldn’t have been in the roles in the first place, you know?
Bane. Ok my problem here stands with the same problems everyone had when he was cast. Like. One, this part hardly held any connection to the Bane in the comics (minus the back breaking, mask, and bulky appearance), so… couldn’t Nolan have had Tom Hardy (like he so clearly needed to) in a different role? Come up with a character, pick someone else from the comics. There was no NEED for this to be Bane, imo.
And, ok, if he wanted the Bane that we saw in the movie I thought it would have been even more successful if he HAD been a POC. Like, the talk about oppression (even with the prisoner background) was painfully uncomfortable for me. I get they wanted the fake out with Talia, but I still feel like they both should have been played by mixed race actors.
One last grievance and then I’ll get to better stuff— oh my god that fucking Robin scene I cannot. Took me out of the ending sequence for a while, negl. Like, if you want to do the hokey name thing, have her say his name is TIM DRAKE (relatively similar to John BLAKE), or Dick Grayson (with the cop thing). I mean, I guess you have to appeal to a movie going audience rather than a comics audience, but couldn’t his middle name have been Robin or some shit? Tim Robin Drake. Idk.
On the plus I liked that it was lighter than TDK! I liked the uplifting ending for Bruce. And I loved that the recurring characters got their moment to shine (Lucius & Jim in particular). That was a nice touch, and I liked that it WAS emphasized that Bruce is not alone. Even if that could have been shown with the Batfam I’m JUST SAYING.
Also I totally teared up at the Alfred scenes. GodDAMN.
